Short answer: wear simple, well-fitting clothes in solid, mid-tone colours that suit you, and dress for how you want to be seen at work or in auditions. Avoid busy patterns, big logos and anything you feel uncomfortable in, and bring at least two options.
The golden rules
- Solid colours beat patterns. Stripes, checks and small prints can distract or flicker on screen.
- Choose colours that suit your skin tone and eyes. Jewel tones such as navy, teal, burgundy and forest green flatter most people.
- Fit matters more than brand. Clothes should be pressed and fit well across the shoulders.
- Mind the neckline. In a head-and-shoulders crop, the neckline frames your face. V-necks and open collars lengthen the neck.
- Keep accessories simple. Small earrings or a watch are fine; large statement jewellery pulls focus.
- Bring options. Each outfit is a new look, and you can decide with the photographer on the day.
What colours should you avoid?
- Busy patterns and fine stripes – distracting, and they can create odd effects on screens.
- Colours close to your skin tone – they can wash you out.
- Very bright neon shades – they can cast colour onto your face.
- Large logos or text – they date quickly and distract.
- The same colour as the backdrop – check which backdrops are available before you choose.
What to wear for different types of headshot
Corporate headshots
Dress as you would for an important client meeting. For teams, agree a dress code in advance so the photos look consistent on your website. See corporate headshots.
LinkedIn headshots
Match your industry. A creative might wear a smart jumper; a lawyer, a suit. Aim for approachable and professional. See LinkedIn headshots.
Actors headshots
Keep it simple so your face does the work. Plain t-shirts, shirts and knitwear in different colours give you distinct looks for different casting types. See actors headshots.
Hair, make-up and grooming
- Get a haircut a week or so before, not the day before.
- Keep make-up natural and matte to reduce shine.
- Bring a comb, lip balm and a blotting powder or tissues.
- Moisturise and drink water the day before.
